Tributes have been shared online following the death of Inverness Courier columnist Bill McAllister.

The writer of the popular Down Memory Lane column was a well-respected journalist, author and media relations officer who worked for a number of Highland titles including the North Star and Highland News. He also set up his own public relations company, McAllister Media. He was married to Inverness Central councillor Bet McAllister.

“Bill McAllister was one of the most recognisable and respected journalists of his generation and during a career that spanned decades, he was a regular contributor to radio listeners and newspapers with his unique style for describing sporting events, from football to sports and athletics and shinty matches for BBC Radio Scotland, the Press & Journal and the Inverness Courier and Highland News and Media Group...Sending deepest condolences to his wife Bet and all the McAllister family at this very sad time, and also to the many friends and acquaintances of Bill across the world of journalism and sport. He will be sadly missed by the many people who knew him and enjoyed his company and good humour and appreciated his many contributions, observations and anecdotes to our Highland life and culture throughout the years.” – Councillor Duncan Macpherson

“A very real loss for everyone, his passing will be felt throughout the Highlands and beyond. Bill was such a well-known and respected figure. My thoughts and prayers are with Bet and other family members at this time.” – Councillor Ken Gowans

“Bill and my late dad Ian were great pals and he wrote an amazing obituary for dad. Thoughts from Pat and family are with Bet and family.” – Mic Mac

“Bill was a real pro. Thinking of Bet and all the family.” – Jane Candlish

“Awfully sad news. I always valued Bill’s wisdom and humour, he will be deeply missed by his many friends and family.” – John Robert Erskine

“I was fortunate to know and respect him during my time managing in the Highland League. Bill was always helpful and unbiased in his reporting. He was a real character. Condolences to his family.” – George Adams, Glasgow
