Recycling scheme can work

Colin Campbell, in his article in the Inverness Courier 17/3/23, expresses his dislike of the Scottish Government’s proposal to add a small surcharge to cans and bottles that will be reimbursed on the return of said empty cans and bottles.

Admirably, he travels on his bike, rather than by car, and likes to buy four cans of beer (who doesn’t?).

However, he is concerned about how he would get his empty cans back to the, as yet unknown, collection point.

I would suggest that empty cans weigh considerably less than full cans and if he squashes the empty cans he will find that they also take up considerably less space.

Therefore, if he is able to carry the full cans home on his bike, he should have no problem in carrying them back empty!

More important would be that, should this proposal be implemented, the collection points are easily accessible and that a fare on traders’/retailers’ financial system is worked out.

I know that this can work, as Sweden, where I was brought up and still visit, have had a similar system in place for many years.

Should Highland Council be broken up?

Smaller councils would work better for Highlands

At the recent Inverness Courier Leadership Debate, bringing together all three candidates then vying for the job of Scotland’s next First Minister, they shared their thoughts on breaking up Highland Council.

“Recognition at last that Highland Council is too big and not fit for purpose. The council is Inverness-centric and basically all other small towns and communities are cast adrift. Same applies to NHS Highland with regard to the provision of healthcare and vaccination services. Nairnshire Council did a fantastic job for the Shire and it flourished. Regrettably HC are only interested in plundering Nairn’s Common Good Fund at every opportunity but once it is gone officers will struggle to remember Nairn. Bringing back Nairnshire Council and other local councils in the Highlands now more than ever is a priority and the best way to ensure every community gets its fair share of funding, something which has been sadly lacking for the past 25 years.” – Loreine Thomson, Nairn
