Sheriff Sara Matheson heard the case at Inverness Justice Centre.

A sheriff expressed concern about a drug addict's appearance when he was before her to admit possession of 1.4 grams of heroin.

Sheriff Sara Matheson told 45-year-old Mark Lennan, of Anderson Street, Inverness: "You look awful. You are on your way to killing yourself."

She offered him the opportunity of a drug treatment and testing order.

He had been stopped by police outside his home on March 30 this year and the drug was found.

Defence solicitor advocate Neil Wilson told Inverness Sheriff Court: "He has had long-term difficulties with drug abuse."

Lennan also admitted breaching a community payback order by failing to complete his allocated hours of unpaid work.

Sheriff Matheson fined him a total of £710.
