POLICE have urged people to stay vigilant and keep checking for weather updates after a yellow warning for storm force winds was issued by the Met Office.

Severe gales and storm force winds with gusts of up to 70mph are forecast from 9pm onwards tonight (Tuesday) through to 6am on Thursday morning.

Winds are already building though, and warnings for high winds on the Kessock Bridge were issued shortly before 9am. Delays of up to 15 minutes were expected.

Warning motorists about the imminent storm force winds, Police Scotland said: "The winds are believed to be strong enough that there could be some structural damage associated with them, and they will also be accompanied by high seas which have the potential to cause wave overtopping.

"There are warnings of localised flooding in the area along with surface waters on roads. The public is also advised to check partner agency websites and listen to radio reports for further updates. There is also the strong possibility of disruption to public transport."

"We would also like to remind the public to secure any outside items such as garden furniture and play equipment, for example trampolines," they added.
