Work has started on a £500,000 upgrade at Inverness fire station to improve on-duty conditions for staff.

It involves a new 16-bed dormitory on the first floor, with segregation between the female and male areas and improved privacy and comfort.

New shower facilities have also been added in the male and female resting places.

Contractor Morgan Sindall Construction expects to finish the work in early 2022.

The project, designed by Dundee architects Gauldie Wright and Partners, involves a complete strip out and modernisation, with new fittings, furnishings and carpets.

The refurbished dormitory is designed to be more energy efficient, with improved insulation and new windows, while new additions will include a desk with each bed and hairdryers.

Stuart Parker, Morgan Sindall Construction’s Scotland managing director, said the company is proud to be upgrading the fire station which is an integral part of the community and is looking forward to revealing the refurbished facilities early next year.

“The men and women who serve in the fire service face a difficult and intense job and deserve a modern, fit-for-purpose environment in which to relax between incidents,” he said.

“Carrying out construction work on a live fire station requires special considerations and expertise.

“We have a track record of successfully delivering blue-light projects such as this and we are working closely with those working at the station to ensure there is no disruption to their day-to-day activities.

“The project aligns closely with our net zero target, where we are implementing ways and methods of reducing our emissions by 60 per cent by 2030.”

The firemen and women are using portable cabins provided by the station while the dormitory is out of use.

In working towards its environmental goals, Morgan Sindall Construction will use separate skips for plaster board and timber to avoid mixing of wastes and will also recycle electrical goods.

It is also encouraging its team of local employees to cycle into work as the development is easily accessible from the city centre.
