GROUND has finally been broken on a £90 million Inverness housing development described as the most important of its kind for a generation.

Plans to create 757 new homes at Ness-side were originally granted in December 2017, just days after the opening of the first phase of the West Link road there.

With the new road opening up the 35-acre site from Holm Mills bridge to the Tesco roundabout at Dores Road for development, a sod-cutting yesterday marked the official beginning of building work, expected to be completed in phases over the next 15 years.

Deputy Provost Bet McAllister said it was “the most important housing development in our city boundaries for the next 20 years” and added: “It is difficult to see such a large strategically located area being zoned for housing within the city boundaries for a couple of decades at the very least.”
