Construction work has started on a new housing development in Inverness.

Tulloch Homes has broken ground at the Drummond Hill site just off Stratherrick Road in the Lochardil area of the city.

The developer has plans for nine “executive” homes, six town houses, three cottages, 12 apartments and a gatehouse.

A 132-year-old mansion on the site is also to be given a facelift and refurbishment and will house six flats when completed.

Site manager Brian MacBride, a joiner by trade with 25 years’ experience, has been appointed to run the luxury development and said he is excited that work is under way.

He said: “We’ve already begun laying the foundations for the first homes and they’ll look really great once they’re finished.

“Tulloch build high quality homes and I’m absolutely delighted to be working for them, and I’ve an excellent team for the prestigious Drummond Hill development.

“By the end of the year the distinctive quality will be apparent and the first occupancies will be in the spring.”

The renovation of the gatehouse is already under way.

Special skills will be used for the mansion, built in 1890 for leading Inverness solicitor William Burns and his wife Jane.

It is the last of several large villas built in the Lochardil area in the 19th century.

The pink sandstone two-storey five-bay Italianate mansion was built by Sir Alexander Ross, the celebrated local architect named “the Christopher Wren of the North.”

It will sit at the heart of the development surrounded by the new properties.

Mr MacBride added:”This is a special opportunity for Tulloch, myself and the team as we give Drummond Hill a new era of gracious living.”
