An Inverness woodland conservation group is to hold an open day celebrating the area finally coming into community ownership.

Culduthel Woods Group (CWG) was set up as a charity in 2019 to look after the area, which had been neglected for some time.

Since then work has been carried out to improve the area, including the removal of a number of trees which were deemed dangerous to members of the public.

Now that the space is under community ownership they will hold a celebration on Sunday, with a special appearance from Paralympic gold medallist cyclist Karen Drake.

The group took formal ownership of the woodland in May.

The woods had previously been owned by a housing developer but had become ownerless in more recent years.

Chairman Murray Ferguson thanked all involved.

He said: “We are really delighted to get to the stage of owning the land and forming a new community wood.

“It is a big responsibility to look after this green space that is so well used and loved by so many people.

“Over time, we will work to make the woods more natural and even better for wildlife, by removing exotic and invasive species and opening up the canopy to allow more light for native trees.

“We have been helped by so many people to get to this stage.”
