A holiday in the Highlands turned violent for a couple after a few drinks in an Inverness pub.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that 24 year old Thomas Grayson of Olive Grove, Starbeck, had been drinking with his partner of three years in the Castle Tavern on August 23.

Fiscal depute Naomi Duffy-Welsh told Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood: "Staff were finalising their duties when they heard the woman shouting for help. He was shouting at her and ran after her.

"He threw her to the ground and punched her then pulled her up and punched her again to the ground. Then he kicked her on the head.

"Police were called and she had a noticeable head injury. She was taken to hospital but declined medical treatment."

Defending, Graham Mann said his client, who admitted the assault to injury, did not have "a history of this type of behaviour."

He added: "This was entirely unprecedented. Everything up until then had been good but he had been drinking. He has no recollection of why this happened.

"She does not see him as a threat and he wants the relationship to continue."

Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood told Grayson that kicking someone on the head merited a jail sentence.

"The only thing that prevents me from doing that is your lack of record," he said.

Grayson was placed on social work supervision for two years and ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid community work.

Grayson was also banned for six months from entering the street where his girlfriend lives.

The sheriff added: "This prevents co-habitation but allows contact so you can both decide if the relationship is to continue."
