A man wielding a bottle threatened to smash it over the heads of two 14-year-olds in Inverness railway station

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that John Robertson (31) of the city's Church Street entered the room at Inverness station on September 17 last year while the two girls were sitting inside waiting for their train home.

Robertson entered carrying two bottles of ale and asked the children for money, said fiscal depute Robert Weir.

"Initially he left the waiting room without incident but returned a short time later. He stormed in and stood really close to both children, who described him as towering over them,

Mr Weir said Robertson raised one bottle over his head and threatened to smash it over their heads.

"The children genuinely believed he was going to hit them with the bottle. Other adults who were in the room went to the teenagers' aid and one woman waiting to board the sleep train challenged him," he said.

"He then brandished the bottle towards her before walking away. Rail staff were alerted who in turn contacted the British Transport Police. He was apprehended a short time later."

Robertson, who admitted previous convictions, pleaded guilty to conducting himself in a disorderly manner and was jailed for a year.
