BBC bosses are remaining tight-lipped on whether a second series of a hit BBC TV reality show set in a Highland castle is being commissioned.

The Traitors has hooked millions of viewers and provided an unexpected boost to the Highland tourism trade thanks to its atmospheric setting at a landmark Ross-shire castle and shots of the surrounding landscape.

The final on BBC One last night was watched by a peak of 3.7 million viewers and the show has now been watched 3.7 million times on BBC iPlayer.

Fronted by Claudia Winkleman– until now best known for her role presenting celebrity dance show Strictly on the same channel – The Traitors began with 22 contestants, one of whom was ‘murdered’ most nights.

Ardross Castle is a base for the contestants and is featured prominently throughout.

It is more used to playing host host to weddings and conferences.

Three of the contestants are 'traitors' – known only to each other and viewers - who work together in a psychological battle with a £120,000 prize pot up for grabs.

With elements reminiscent of shows like The Apprentice, I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here and Big Brother, The Traitors quickly gained a devoted following and fuelled impassioned social media discussion after each episode.

The show's publicist would not be drawn on future plans for the show saying the BBC is not providing comment on speculation over a new series.

But she said: "The Traitors final achieved 3.3 million viewers on BBC One last night and won the slot with a 20.2 per cent audience share and a peak of 3.7 million viewers. The Traitors has now been viewed 17 million times on BBC iPlayer."

The Traitors was produced for the BBC by Studio Lambert Associates
