A CULLODEN butcher is top of the chops after becoming the first Scottish winner of a coveted Golden Cleaver trophy.

A & I Quality Butchers picked up the prize for best marinated steak at the Great British Butcher Awards – hailed by organisers as “the Oscars of the retail butchery industry”.

The firm also received two silver and four bronze gongs for other products at the ceremony in Harrogate at the weekend.

Owner Ali Paul said: “It’s a big achievement for the staff and myself.

“It is an amazing result given the number of butchers involved because you were up against butchers in England, Ireland and Wales as well as Scotland.”

A & I’s star product, which secured the Golden Cleaver trophy, is its Canadian Club steak.

Marinated in a sweet maple and honey mustard sauce, it was given a maximum of 60 points.
