It was a history-making moment when Donald Wilson became the first Nairn journalist to lift an industry lifetime achievement award.

The 67-year-old, who recently retired from Highland News and Media after 51 years in journalism, was awarded the Barron Trophy at the annual Highland and Islands Press Ball and Media Awards at the Kingsmills Hotel, in Inverness, last night.

Towards the end of his career, which included a spell in Australia, he was the community face and lead newsgatherer for the launch of the Nairnshire edition of the Inverness Courier three years ago in his home town.

He said: "The lifetime achievement award was unexpected and I'm absolutely thrilled to receive it.

"I'm still passionate about journalism but I felt the time was right to retire."
