A retired major has taken a rowing trip on Loch Ness in his tiny homemade boat of tin as part of an epic charity fundraising mission.

Retired Scots Dragoon Guards Major Michael Stanley, known as Major Mick, took to the water in Tintanic II.

It was the latest port of call in a journey of waterways around the UK by the 80-year-old who is raising money for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

"I had a great day at Loch Ness," he said.

"The weather was fine, the water calm and the scenery stunning but unfortunately no sign of Nessie!"

He embarked on his latest fundraising venture after rowing 100 miles on the Chichester Canal during last year’s lockdown in the original Tintanic – constructed from two sheets of corrugated iron – raising more than £44,000 for his local hospice in Bosham.

He was inspired to take on a new challenge in the new and improved Tintanic II after seeing Alzheimer’s disease effect friends and family.

He set from Henley on Thames in May and arrived in Scotland last month.

"I would just like to say that I have had the most wonderful two weeks in Scotland," he said.

"Every trip I have made on the canals, loch's and rivers have been fun and rewarding.

"My trip down the Kyle of Sutherland was special with the sun shinning, water like glass and scenery that one normally only sees in photographs - a morning that will stay in my memory.

"What fun I had on the Falkirk Wheel and their generosity and concern.

"I have met so many enthusiastic supporters in the clubs and towns and am impressed with the dedication of numerous individuals in the clubs who give their time to teaching children and the disadvantaged."

"I have a special fondness for Scotland and look forward to returning to visit my friends and relations in the not too distant future."
