WATCH: Muirtown Primary wins School of the Year Award at Highland Heroes 2023

AN Inverness primary school has been named School of the Year at the Highland Heroes 2023 ceremony on Friday.

Muirtown Primary School has been praised for its staff dedication and the excellent learning opportunities, particularly in relation to digital skills and safety.

The school was also praised for giving its youngsters a voice through its pupil leadership groups, where every child from P1 to P7 is a member, the focus ranging from mental health to equality and diversity, and more.

After being awarded the accolade head teacher, Janice MacRae, said: "We are absolutely delighted – and really shocked with this, there were so many great nominations in.

"We were delighted that all the hard work of our school and team was recognised. We have an amazing school and we are so proud of all the achievements we've had this year."

Last year, the school achieved a Digital Schools Scotland award and was made a mentor school for Scotland supporting schools with their digital learning as well as achieving a digital wellbeing award, a cyber resilience and safety awar and worked towards promoting safety online. they also gained a Silver Rights Respecting Schools Award.

Ms MacRae added: “One of our teachers achieved the digital innovator of the year award which recognises the digital achievements of the whole school, and we are now Silver Pearson UK Teaching Award winners for digital innovation.”

There were also successes for the shinty team and STEM team and the school maintained its Mentally Healthy School status.

On the night, Muirtown Primary teacher Beth Fuller also scooped the award for Primary teacher of the Year.

A nomination said: “Muirtown are a team who work together with passion to ensure that the school is the absolute best it can be and they deserve to be recognised for their incredible efforts.”
