The minister of one of Inverness’s largest congregations has led his last service in the city online before leaving to take up a new challenge.

Rev Peter Nimmo, who has been minister of Old High St Stephen’s Church for 16 years, is taking up the charge of a church in Cambuslang.

Due to the coronavirus restrictions, he led the communion service from his front room which was broadcast online.

Tribute was paid in a speech afterwards by session clerk, Christine Mackenzie, who recalled his work with the church and support for his congregation as well as his broader role within civic matters including working with five Inverness provosts.

He started the well-attended Ding Dong Merrily Old High carol service following the switch-on of the city's Christmas lights which also raises money for local children’s charities and was also involved in the commemorations to mark the 100th anniversary of World War I.

She also said one his highlights had been the invitation to address the Proud Ness Festival in Inverness in 2018.

"You were able to highlight the importance of challenging hatred, discrimination and exclusion in this gesture of solidarity and support for people who have felt they have been discriminated against and misunderstood by the church," she said.

"Despite criticisms from other faiths this was an opportunity to spread God’s word to over 1000 people."
