For the past 15 months, Scotland’s first multi-purpose centre for young people with learning disabilities and complex needs has been taking shape in Inverness.

With construction work completed, the keys to the Haven Centre were handed over to the Elsie Normington Foundation this week.

The pioneering centre in Murray Road, Smithton will include an indoor specialist play centre with child care facilities, a community café, meeting spaces, and an outdoor garden.

The development also includes three respite flats for young adults up to the age of 30.

The principal contractor is Compass Building and Construction Services whose managing director, Thom Macleod handed over the keys to Elsie Normington.

"It is not really about bricks and mortar," he said.

"It is more about the passion which has gone in it.

"Elsie has been very diligent in getting the right people in the right place at the right time which is fundamental."

The centre will now be fitted out ahead of it opening later this summer.

The project has received support from the Scottish Government, the National Lottery Community Fund and Highland Council as well as the public.
