Clarity Walk is an organisation in Inverness supporting mental health primarily through group walks.

The initiative is simple: getting outdoors, being within nature, connecting with your surroundings and with others away from any devices and screens.

Matt Wallace (31) decided to set up Clarity Walk in 2019 following a rise in suicide and depression rates.

Matt said he is able to sympathise with other people who are also part of an ongoing battle with their mental health: "I think I can relate to a lot of problems people are facing, and I can help offer solutions to resolve these – Clarity Walk helped me," he said.

For some, taking the time out of the day to exercise might seem like an impossible task, but Matt offers the solution of active travel as a way of exercising to and from your 9-to-5 without breaking the bank on a gym membership or having to find childcare.

He said: "With life going at 1000mph it is always good to take time out, slow down and get steps in. Whether that is a walk in a forest, by the river or at a beach, or if you feel fit enough going up a hill – living in the Highlands we have so much opportunity to get out and explore nature to benefit our physical and mental wellbeing.

"If you have a busy or stressful day coming up, plan a walk before or after work so you can re-charge and reset so you are able to take on the day and week."

Matt said: "Walking also doesn't have to feel like taking time out of your day. You can include it in your daily routine: start walking to work instead of driving.

"For me walking in nature has been so therapeutic for my mental health, and has taken me from some very low points in my life and helped me achieve more balance so I could feel happier and more energised."

He said: "I enjoy being surrounded by the trees, plants and hearing the birdsong with each step – It has been something in my life I will always be grateful for and it's why I encourage others to join me and experience the power of nature for themselves."
