A BABY loss charity is calling on local communities to walk a mile a day this month to fundraise and raise awareness of its work.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Baby Loss Awareness campaign in the UK, taking place this week.

A chance for those who have lost a baby to come together to remember much loved and missed youngsters, the charity Held in Our Hearts also sees it as an opportunity to connect with the community of bereaved parents that they support and for others to show their solidarity for them.

This year, the charity is calling on the local community to take part in their “Walk A Mile In Our Shoes” effort by fundraising and walking a daily mile in October.

Nicola Welsh, the charity’s chief executive, said: “As a bereaved parent myself I know how hard that walk was and still can be, living without my son, Theo.

“For the families that we support, we know that each step they have to make, can take a momentous amount of energy and courage – that first step out of hospital without their baby, that first step out of the front door, walking through the doors on their return to work.

“We are asking as many people as possible to get involved in our, ‘Walk A Mile In Our Shoes’ and help ensure we can continue to walk alongside bereaved families, providing a lifeline through our specialist counselling and peer support”.

Anyone can get involved, whether they are a bereaved parent, grandparent or friend who would like to walk in memory of a special baby or they simply feel for anyone who has lost a little one.

The challenge is suitable for all ages and donations can be made by setting up a JustGiving page.

The charity will be holding a number of events during Baby Loss Awareness week.

The local community can get involved in a number of ways; businesses, organisations, and even homes can turn pink and blue to show their support, businesses could also encourage their team to wear pink or blue throughout the week, or take part in a pink or blue bake sale.
