The eight contenders are:

- Canal Parks Bridge

- Caledonian Crossing

- Great Glen Crossing

- Holm Mills Bridge

- Ness West Crossing

- Torvean Bridge

- West Link Bridge

- Whin Bridge

The multimillion-pound West Link – which will connect the A82 to Dores Roundabout – is due to open in December.

A fun run is to be one of the events held to mark the opening of the road.

Highland Council is hosting the vote. Its environment, development and infrastructure committee chairman Allan Henderson said: “It is very exciting to be so close to the opening of the new bridge and the completion of the first phase of the West Link project.

“The new road will connect our communities, providing options for A82 users and should reduce congestion in the centre of Inverness as well as increase the opportunities for people to walk and cycle.”

City Provost Helen Carmichael said: “I know that people are really looking forward to using it and I hope lots of people will come along and take part in some of the activities we are planning, which include a fun run across the bridge. It is fitting that people should be able to choose the name.”
