Sergeant Instructor Flora Thomson (60) volunteers with 1st Battalion The Highlanders’ Fortrose Detachment and has now been promoted to Staff Sergeant Instructor.

She has been volunteering with the cadets since September 2004 and is well known within the battalion.

SSI Thomson acts as a mother figure for the cadets, being a comforting person to talk to and ensuring they get the best out of their experiences.

During a group trip to the battlefields of Belgium and France she encouraged cadets to research beforehand to see if their families had any links to the conflicts, so they could pay their respects.

Outside of her military training duties Ms Thomson also helps with the pipe band activities of the battalion and has also completed her drum major’s course.
