The Battle of Culloden is set to be brought to life for a worldwide online audience.

Virtual tours will be launched by conservation charity the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) this month.

They will allow people to visit the battlefield and get expert insights into the battle which brought the Jacobite Risings to an end in April 1746.

The immersive tours feature stunning 360-degree drone footage of Culloden moor, interactive 3D artefacts, gun smoke, war cries and videos of hand-to-hand combat between Charles Edward Stuart’s supporters and government forces.

It was on April 16, 1746, that a Hanoverian government army under the Duke of Cumberland went head-to-head with Prince Charles Edward Stuart's forces. A decisive victory for Cumberland, the clash lasted just under an hour and ended the Jacobites' hopes of restoring a Stuart to the British thrones.

The NTS custodians of the battlefield site for 80 years, has teamed up with digital engagement specialist YourTour to create the Culloden Battlefield Live-Guided Virtual Visit.

There’s no software to install and no tours to download – simply click on a link to time-travel back to the battlefield.

Virtual Visit is part of the NTS's work through its 10-year strategy to provide access and enjoyment for everyone.

Gail Cleaver, operations manager at Culloden, said: "Providing inspiring heritage visitor experiences is an important part of what we are working to do at the National Trust for Scotland, and this amazing new virtual tour means that there are more chances for people to experience and benefit from this beautiful place, wherever they are in the world."

She continues: "This has certainly been a challenge over the last few years due to the pandemic, which has given us a real focus on exploring innovative ways to bring the important story of the Battle of Culloden to as wide an audience as possible.”

The Virtual Visits booking line opens on January 24 with the first tour available on January 31. Tours are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 3pm and cost £10 per person. For more information go to www.nts.org.uk
