Victorian seance experience to feature in performance of Spirits of Inverness at Abertarff House

The dark history of Inverness will be recounted during an event featuring a Victorian séance experience at the city's oldest house.

Spirits of Inverness, a mix of talk, demonstration and performance, will take place at Abertarff House in Church Street on Thursday evening.

It will be presented by writer and performer Cara Hamilton who is an expert on on Victorian spiritualism and witchcraft.

It will include some items from her own personal museum of witchcraft and sorcery.

Ms Hamilton has previously performed her dark shows in North America, mainland Europe and Scandinavia.

"I often have extremely diverse audiences," she said. "They all loved it and liked the fact I am not poking fun at anyone’s beliefs.

"The show reveals what spiritualists were meant to do, all done in an ethic of to educate and entertain."

Ms Hamilton says she is not a stranger to Inverness.

"When looking into its darker times, there was such an amount of arcane history and especially connections to this house, it made me sit up and take notice," she said.

She will highlight why fortune telling and spiritualism were important in Victorian Inverness and recount stories about gypsies with royal connections and mystics escaping persecution.

Tickets can be bought at Eventbrite.

The event, which is for over 16-year-olds only, starts at 7pm and lasts 90 minutes.
