The incident began just before noon today and lasted around seven hours.

People were being warned to steer clear of the area as armed officers and emergency crews encircled the property.

Described as a “concern for person” incident, it is understood extra precautions were taken through fears the occupant had a firearm.

Smashed windows are visible at the home on the Kenneth Street section of the A82 road near the Telford roundabout.

At least eight police cars and vans, three fire engines and other fire service vehicles, an ambulance and roads crew were in attendance, with the street closed to traffic until just after 6.30pm.

It is understood that police negotiators were in contact with a man inside the flat and worked to encourage him to leave the building peacefully.

Crowds gathered as the drama unfolded from around 11.50am this morning when the alarm was first raised.

They were soon moved back behind police cordons which closed several streets connecting to Kenneth Street.

It believed gas and electricity was switched off in the immediate vicinity of the property as a safety precaution.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed their officers had left the scene.

Police have not yet confirmed the incident has ended, but onlookers said a man had been led from the building.
