A NUMBER of households and shops have been evacuated "as a precaution" as bomb disposal experts assess ordnance dug up in an Easter Ross town yesterday evening.

As reported earlier, a police cordon was thrown around an area of Invergordon after discovery of what is understood to be unexploded ordnance, possibly dating to World War I.

Schools in the town were also closed as police moved to contain the area which is close to Invergordon Academy and the fire station.

Police earlier said they were "dealing with an incident at Castle Avenue and as a result a portion of the road between the junctions of Gordon Terrace and Academy Road is shut. Davidson Drive is also shut with no vehicular or pedestrian traffic permitted."

Inspector Chris Murray said this afternoon: “Emergency services are in attendance at Castle Terrace, Invergordon after an unexploded ordnance was found. A cordon has been put in place and EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] are in attendance. We are working with partners as a number of residents and shops have been evacuated as a precaution.”
