Glasgow Airport is reopening with waiting passengers now filing back inside the terminal.

Earlier, staff warned that because they could not access the terminal then flights were being cancelled.

It comes after a report of a "suspicious item" that led to the Royal Navy bomb disposal team being called.

Glasgow Airport confirmed that the incident was being "stood down."

Writing on Twitter, an airport spokesperson said: "Police Scotland have confirmed the incident has been stood down and our staff are now in the process of welcoming passengers back into the terminal and providing any assistance required.

"We would like to thank our passengers for their patience."

Earlier, Cllr Maclean described the scene, saying: “It was calm inside the airport early 6am or 7 am this morning. We couldn't hear what was being said on the tannoy then people were asked to move out to the carpark around 8.30am.

“We passed the bomb squad truck with the robot sitting outside it. We were asked to move to the back of the car park. Many have been given blankets and foil blankets. Water was distributed inside the airport.

“Staff are coming round the crowd and announcing that flights are now cancelled as staff can't help as they are not able to get into the airport. People are being called forward by [airline] company to be told what is happening.

"Most people are still in the car park. The Salvation Army arrived in a van offering much needed hot tea and coffee.”

Police Scotland were called around 06.00 and a Royal Navy bomb disposal team had been sent to airport, the check-in and search areas of the airport were then closed.

Police also confirmed that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) was in attendance and the item posed "no risk to the public and was innocent in nature."
