THE main trunk road through the Highlands was reopened following a flooding-related closure that forced diversions for several hours.

The A9 was closed at Tomich on Saturday afternoon.

It was finally reopened around 10pm according to Traffic Scotland which collects and distributes real-time traffic and travel information for the entire Scottish trunk road and motorway network.

The closure came following a long period of persistent rain which was allied to a Met Office weather warning.

Another weather warning – this time for wind – started at midnight.

The Yellow warning for strong winds flagged the potential for more disruption. That could include:

- Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected

- Some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer

- Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges

- Some short term loss of power and other services

- Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.

Traffic Scotland said at midnight that road users are advised to use caution crossing the A9 Kessock Bridge due to high winds currently affecting driving conditions.

Highland police also flagged challenging driving conditions, posting: "Please consider whether your journey is necessary before setting off and drive to the conditions at all times if travelling."
