A failure to pay rent is behind the closure of a large sports bar and grill in the heart of Inverness city centre.

The glass front entrance of SoBar on Castle Street was boarded up today, with the premises in darkness.

SoBar’s landlords, The Waverley Inn Group, initially refused to comment on why the property at 55-67 Castle Street had been closed down.

But just after 4pm today one of their representatives posted a notice on the front of the premises saying: 'Closed due to non-payment of rent'.

It is understood a similar notice posted earlier today had been ripped down.

There has been no comment on the closure on SoBar’s social media and their listed website address was a dead link.

Waverley’s area manager Robert Norris would only confirm SoBar had been closed “for the foreseeable future”, declining to comment further.

The Courier has attempted to contact the firm’s owners Matthew and Tim Culley.
