UPDATE: 'A real disaster' as block of flats destroyed in Nairn blaze

A blaze in Nairn has been described as "a real disaster" with an entire block of flats destroyed.

The blaze started at just after 1pm in the three-storey block in Harbour Road, with fire crews from as far as Aberdeen being called to the scene.

Nearby businesses have also been forced to close due to the ongoing incident with the power supplies cut in the area.

The Sundancer restaurant in Nairn took to social media to say: "We will unfortunately be closing tonight due to the severe situation that has emerged at the harbour.

"We will be contacting our reservations shortly.

"We wish everyone safe passage at this tragic time and we will do our best to support the families who have been affected with fire.

"Our phones are down due to the power being off at this time."

It is unclear how the blaze started, but no injuries have been reported due to the result of the incident.

Provost of Nairn, Laurie Fraser said: "It's a real tragedy, five flats were lost, the whole block has gone.

"Thankfully no one was injured and everyone got out, but this is a real disaster.

"As councillors, we will be there and available to help when approached."

People on social media are also pledging donations to support those who have lost their homes.

Lucy Harding, manager of Nairn Business Improvement District (BID) added: "Everyone is so shocked by what has happened.

"Our sympathy goes out to all have been impacted, and we will do anything that we can to help the businesses and organisation that have been affected."

Fire crews from Nairn, Forres, Inverness, Elgin, Huntly and Aberdeen have all been deployed to the scene.
