A NAIRN golf club has scooped one of the most prestigious awards in the golf industry this year.

Nairn Dunbar Golf Club was named environmental golf course of the Year at the recent Golf Environment Awards.

The award was won under the stewardship of course manager Richard Johnstone, who has praised his team for their hard work. He said: “Winning the award for the second time in three years is a fantastic achievement for us at Nairn Dunbar as we strive to achieve environmental sustainability, provide a positive contribution to wildlife and continue to deliver high quality playing surfaces for members and guests.

“The team are absolutely thrilled to receive the award and it is fulfilling to know that our sustainable and sensitive management practices used across our site are being recognised not just within the local community but on the world stage.”

The Golf Environment Awards (GEA) aim to reward and promote outstanding individuals and golf courses for the time and effort they have put into protecting and preserving their unique surroundings. Scottish representative for the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association, John Young, said: “This is a brilliant award that was given in recognition of Richard and his team’s incredible commitment to improving wildlife habitat and other environmentally-friendly measures across the course.”

It’s the second time in recent years that the Nairn Dunbar team has been recognised in such a way.

“Richard has worked really hard to become a top notch professional in his field, not only by becoming a Master Greenkeeper, but he is also a R&A Scholar, another prestigious honour in the greenkeeping industry. Richard continues to champion excellent greenkeeping and environmental work and is an exceptional example of the modern greenkeeper, who does so much more than you may imagine (they don’t just cut grass!).”
