Dashcam footage showed an American holidaymaker was on the wrong side of the road before a collision near Inverness Airport.

Lyndsey Howard (34), from Dalcross, was heading towards the A96 at around 3pm on Monday when she was confronted by a Hyundai Tuscon 4x4 on her side of the road.

Luckily she was driving her husband Andy’s large Nissan X-trail and both drivers escaped serious injury.

Mr Howard, a wildlife photographer, said: “Lyndsey is fine apart from whiplash and bruising.

“She was driving my Nissan X-Trail and was hit head-on by a chap on the wrong side of the road, on holiday from New York.

“I’m so happy she was driving my five-month-old car that had a crazy amount of safety features, all of which did their job perfectly. Both vehicles were almost new SUVs and both Lyndsey and the other driver were walking wounded.”

Mr Howard and his wife now believe it would be a good idea if overseas drivers had to watch a five-minute video of how to drive on the left when they arrive, and perhaps see footage such as that taken by his dash-cam.

“He admitted liability and the dashcam footage from our vehicle shows that he was 100 per cent to blame," Mr Howard said. "I’d only just fitted the cameras three days previously.

“I’m just happy there was no serious injury. Vehicles can be replaced, people can’t.”

Mr Howard understands the visitor continued his journey without charge.

“We don’t bear the guy any grudge,” he said. “There is always a human element and it is easy to have lapses of concentration.”
