A former Lord Lieutenant of Nairnshire has passed away at the Town and County Hospital in Nairn.

Ewen Brodie of Lethen (CVO) was a son of Major David James Brodie of Lethen, who died in 1966, and his wife Diana, who passed away in 1991.

With wife Mariota, Mr Brodie (78) devoted his life to the estate near Auldearn which he took over following his father’s death.

Educated at Harrow School he joined the Grenadier Guards 1st Battalion in 1961 and met his wife to-be in London.

After military service he joined computer giant IBM in sales, later moving from London to Glasgow.

He moved back home to Lethen to run the family estate in 1976. His widow said it was his life’s work and he took a keen interest in sheep farming, forestry and salmon conservation.

Mr Brodie was also an active member of Nairnshire Farming Society, the Timber Growers’ Association and the River Findhorn District Salmon Fishery Board.

Mrs Brodie said the family would be forever indebted to the NHS and staff and Nairn Town and County Hospital for their care before his passing on December 2.

She added: “He enjoyed his work as Lord Lieutenant of Nairnshire, a role he fulfilled for 18 years .”

One of a family of four, Mr Brodie was predeceased by his elder sister and one brother and has one surviving sister, Janet, who lives in Australia.

He is also survived by his three daughters, Sarah, who lives at Lethen House, Jane in France and Katherine who lives in Nairn.

Current Lord Lieutenant George Asher said: “Ewen was a very diligent Lord Lieutenant for 18 years who cared passionately for Nairnshire and the people of Nairnshire. He served HM The Queen with dignity and enjoyed his role and he was always there to advise and assist me when I was appointed as his successor in 2017.”
