A minute’s silence could be held at a Highland shinty fixture so fans can pay their respects to a club stalwart.

News of the death of 82-year-old James MacKintosh, who was also known as Jimmac, was shared by both Glen Urquhart and Strathglass shinty clubs.

Mr MacKintosh, who lived at McColl Road in Cannich, had strong connections with both clubs and was well known within the Highland shinty community.

Stuart MacKintosh, the fixtures secretary at Glen Urquhart Shinty Club, said Mr MacKintosh was his uncle and they had not yet spoken about whether or not to hold the minute’s silence.

However, he said: “We probably will. He was well known in the whole shinty community.”

In its Facebook post, a club spokesman said they were very sad to learn of the passing of the former manager and player.

The post added: “Jimmac was a key member of the successful Glen side of the early 1960s. He continued to play regularly for the Glen into the mid-1970s and later managed the side for a spell in the 1980s.

“A great supporter of youth shinty, Jimmac was involved in setting up the Glen Albyn league, with Renee and the late Robert Macdonald.

“He also accompanied Glenurquhart High School shinty team to Ireland in 2006 and, as always, was at home in every kind of company.”

He was described as being “a shinty man to his fingertips” who also found time to manage Strathglass Shinty Club and was as supportive of the Glen’s traditional rivals as he was of his own native Glen.

The post said: “He will be greatly missed not only by his own immediate family but by the whole shinty community.”

In its Facebook post, a Strathglass Shinty Club spokesman said they, as well as the wider shinty community, were also deeply saddened.

A club spokesman said: “Jimmac was a huge character, who along with late wife Catriona, formed a massive part in the lives of those fortunate to have met them, particularly folks living and growing up in their company and friendship in Cannich, Strathglass and Glen Urquhart.”

Mr MacKintosh was a former slater and the proprietor of The Slaters Arms in Cannich.

The funeral service will be held on Monday from the family home and thereafter to New Kilmore Cemetery.
