Tributes have been paid to Councillor Ian Ramon who sadly died last Thursday, it is understood that he had been in poor health for some time.

Cllr Ramon was elected as Conservative to serve the Fort William and Ardnamurchan ward in 2017, he also sat on the Lochaber and Communities and Place Committees.

Convener of Highland Council Bill Lobban paid tribute, saying: “Ian was a well-respected member of Highland Council and he will be sorely missed by fellow members. His keen input into our debates was much appreciated.

“Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, I had not seen him personally for quite some time but in better times our joint interest in lighthouses was always extremely interesting.

“Our thoughts are with his family and close friends at this sad time.”

The leader of the Scottish Conservative group, Cllr Andrew Jarvie, said: “This news comes as such a shock to all of us, he was an incredible man who always seemed to bounce back and was eager to get back to council meetings.

"As an immensely popular local man, Ian will be missed not just by all of us in the Scottish Conservative group, but by a great many on the peninsula and across the Highlands.

"I can only express my deepest sorrow with his family at this sudden and difficult news."

“I was saddened to hear the announcement of the death of my Highland Conservative colleague Cllr Ian Ramon, and my deepest condolences are extended to his family on what must be a deeply trying time for them personally.

Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston also weighed in paying tribute to his dedication to the local area.

“Ian was a Conservative stalwart in Lochaber for many years, culminating in his election as a ward Councillor back in 2017," he said.

"A local man through and through, with dedicated knowledge of his own community – he was widely respected across political divides, with today’s tributes exemplifying that fact.

“Cllr Ramon made a unique contribution to the proceedings of Highland Council, drawing on his own experience as one of the last Lighthouse Keepers at Ardnamurchan Point and continuing to be involved as a tour guide until recently.

“He will be sorely missed for his dedication to public life in the Highlands.”

Cllr Ramon's death means there will likely be another by-election – the third this year.
