Organisers of tomorrow's Torvean parkrun are expecting to have to cancel the event due to a makeshift Traveller's encampment at the site.

In a social media post yesterday a spokeswoman said: "We would like to advise this evening that a cancellation is looking highly possible this weekend.

"We’ll know for sure tomorrow afternoon and we’ll make another announcement then. Thanks for your understanding."

The Travellers' arrived at the site earlier this week and Highland Council has been made aware of the unauthorised encamp ment.

Earlier this week a spokesman said: “Our staff are liaising with the people in volved and progressing the ‘policy on supporting co-operation and manag ing unauthorised camps’, which sets out the multi-agency responsibilities and arrangements for responding to roadside encampments.”

The Inverness Courier approached the Travellers but they did not wish to make a statement.

Mike Fowlie, of Inverness, said: "Having walked round the park walking my dog I witnessed at least two of the travellers dumping the garden waste from their van into the bushes and trees around the park."

He claimed he was then approached by one of them who threatened to take his phone because they thought he had recorded what they were doing.
