Travel Lemming names Inverness among world’s 50 best places to travel to in 2024

The popular online travel guide Travel Lemming has ranked Inverness at number 40 on its annual list of best places to travel in the world ahead of other gems such as Sorrento in Italy and the village of Takayama in the “Japanese Alps.”
The top five places according to the US-based online travel guide read by more than 10 million travellers are – Yucatán, Mexico; Gizo, Solomon Islands; Stavanger, Norway; Antigua, Guatemala and Memphis, Tennessee.
Being placed at number 40 is quite a feat given the only other places from the UK made this year’s list – the first was one of the country’s major cities and a whole country with Manchester at 15 and in Wales at 19 – the full list can be found here.
The annual list highlights emerging destinations and hidden gems around the world with the report calling Inverness “one of Scotland’s most captivating cities” that leaves visitors “awe-struck by its cultural experiences and architecture”.
It cites setting out to find the Loch Ness Monster, viewing Inverness Castle, and learning about Scottish legends at the Flora MacDonald statue among the activities visitors should prioritise.
The list is a collaborative project of the publication’s team of more than 35 travel writers and editors. Travel Lemming’s local travel experts each nominate their favourite destinations for consideration by the publication's editorial board.
