A GRUELLING island adventure has helped to raise more than £14,000 to aid Ukrainian refugees.

Ross MacRae, deputy manager at the Orion Group in Inverness, walked to the most northerly, southerly, westerly and easterly points of the Isle of Raasay to raise funds for the Red Cross, which is supporting Ukrainian refugees.

He finished his expedition by climbing to the isle’s highest point, Dun Cann.

Mr Macrae (51) was moved by the plight of Ukrainian refugees and wanted to do something to support them.

With support from Orion, Mr McRae raised funds and received incredible backing from colleagues, family and friends.

Commenting on the Red Cross, Mr McRae said: “They are in Ukraine and neighbouring countries working to reach people with food, water, medical assistance, protection, and trauma care.”

“We hear of incredible resolve and courage in Ukraine and raising funds for the Red Cross is something that we can do to assist from afar.”

His training involved completing daily, lunchtime and evening walks, alongside weekend winter hill climbs, clocking up around fifty miles per week.

The challenge, however, was that that the island walk took place in just three days, across moorland, beaches and hills.

As the charity walk was off-grid, accommodation was a tent for the three nights.

He said: “The rain became heavier, and winds gusted up to 35 or 40 mph so I hoped double pegging the tent would be enough to stop me from becoming airborne.”

Orion managing director, Paul Savage, said: “We are delighted to support Ross’s initiative for such a worthy cause.”

“As a family business, giving back to others has been integral to Orion’s success and we are proud to back the Red Cross.”
