Tourism boss hits back after US comic Greg Proops insults Inverness

INVERNESS’S tourist champion has leapt to the defence of the Highland Capital after it was slated by an American comedian.
Stand-up Greg Proops, perhaps best known on this side of the pond for his time as a panellist on the Channel 4 improv show Whose Line is it Anyway? back in the 1990s, branded Inverness “a disappointing coma with a mall” in a Glasgow show.
The throwaway line was delivered as part of his The Smartest Man in the World show at the Cottiers Theatre during the city’s International Comedy Festival, and was made available as a podcast this week.
Graeme Ambrose, chief executive of Visit Inverness Loch Ness, suggested Mr Proops’s summing up of the city might be a little behind the times.
“I would say to him to get in touch with us to see what he has been missing,” he said.
“I would be delighted to welcome him here to see what the real Inverness has to offer. As we all know, Inverness is not the sleepy place it might once have been. It’s thriving in all sorts of ways and growing fast, and there’s plenty to see and do now that makes it absolutely nothing like a coma!”
