A YOUNG Black Isle volunteer said her nomination to a Scotland-wide award celebrating young people’s achievements came as a surprise.

Former Fortrose Academy pupil Freya Taylor (17) was selected among the finalists of the Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards tomorrow.

The young volunteer, who was commended for the awards for her dedication to helping others, said she didn’t find out she had been nominated until the shortlist was announced.

She said: “I didn’t realise I had been nominated until I heard about the shortlist, so it was quite lovely and a total surprise!

“I think this will encourage me to keep volunteering and help out when there are things that need to be done. I think it shows the importance of volunteering.

“It was through my parents that I started helping out with the refugees, sorting clothes to send to them, and then Wanda MacKay, the youth development officer at Fortrose has encouraged me to do a lot of things. It’s also been the case of joining in when people asked for help for an initiative.”

Having achieved more than 700 volunteering hours, the Munlochy teenager also spearheaded a fundraising campaign to raise money to ship clothes to refugees in need.

With a 24-hour ceilidh with local musicians and a sponsored silence, the event raised more than £3000 for the cause.
