North MP Drew Hendry has called for a General Election after Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation this afternoon.

The Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey SNP politician said: "Any illusion that the UK guarantees 'strength, security and stability’ has completely evaporated."

Ms Truss will remain PM until a successor is appointed. This is expected to take at least a week.

She steps down following a tumultuous 44 days in power which saw her government backtrack on several pledges and the appointments and resignations of a number of cabinet members.

She came into power following a leadership race after the resignation of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister earlier this year.

Mr Hendry added: "Liz Truss became the shortest-serving UK prime minister in history, but not before she tanked the economy, costing the taxpayers billions of pounds and making day-to-day life harder for hard-pushed families. Households across the nations of the UK have seen costs skyrocket due to her disastrous economic experiments, on top of the mess her predecessor made, and the Brexit shambles the Tories created.

"The Tory party has had their chance, and they've blown it time and time again. They simply cannot be allowed to carry on anointing Prime Ministers among themselves without being held accountable to the electorate.

"We need a General Election now, and thereafter the Scottish people must be given a choice to rid ourselves of this perma-shambles once and for all."
