Tornagrain's first shop can now sell alcohol after moves to ensure it got its licence.

Shop owner Joe Mooney said people can now pick up a bottle of wine with their groceries, which will save them a trip elsewhere.

Set in the heart of the newly-designed village, the shop, which opened last month, had been waiting to have its drinks licence approved when coronavirus struck.

Facing uncertaing delay as a result local councillor Duncan Macpherson stepped in to help.

The Inverness South representative said this week: “Tornagrain is a dry village no more.

“Because the council was not meeting due to coronavirus restrictions, it has meant that the off-sales licence for Tornagrain was going to be delayed for some time. So working with council officers we have come up with an interim solution that will be made permanent when the full council meets.

“It makes sense for everyone. People are safer near to home, and now people will be able to do their shopping in the

village without having to make an unnecessary trip into Inverness or Nairn.”

Mr Mooney said it would make a difference to the village.

“People will be able to come in and buy their food, and they don’t have to drive elsewhere to get their alcohol,” he said.

“That means that they don’t have to make an extra trip, or to queue outside one of the larger supermarkets.”
