Warning over potential flooding and travel disruption as Met Office issues alert for thunderstorms across Highlands
THE possibility of flooding and travel disruption across the Highlands has been flagged by weather experts.
With many areas already hit by torrential rain earlier, the Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning for thunderstorms.
The warning runs from 3am on Wednesday through to 10am.
Areas of rain and thunderstorms "may bring some flooding and disruption to parts of Scotland", it says.
The alert adds:
- There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
- There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
- Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
- Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
- There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
- There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.
The Yellow warning is the least severe alert in a sequence which escalates to Amber and then Red.
A Yellow weather alert means severe weather is possible over the next few days and could affect you. It means that you should plan ahead thinking about possible travel delays, or the disruption of your day to day activities.
The Met Office is monitoring the developing weather situation and Yellow means keep an eye on the latest forecast and be aware that the weather may change or worsen, leading to disruption of your plans in the next few days.
