A thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of the Highlands, amid forecasts that up to 40mm of rain could fall in just a few hours.

The alert, which was only issued at 10am, but comes into force as early as midday, covers Inverness, the Black Isle, Easter Ross and south-eastern Sutherland.

It also extends south into the Cairngorms and east through Moray and northern Aberdeenshire.

A spokesman said: "Heavy showers and a few thunderstorms are likely to develop today.

"The showers will be slow moving in places leading to hourly rainfall accumulations of 10-20mm with the chance of 30 to 40mm in a few hours. Lightning will be an additional hazard."

They warned of localised flooding and possible travel disruption, adding: "There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

"Delays to train services are possible.

"Some flooding of a few homes and businesses possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures. Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes."

The warning will be in force until 8pm on Friday.
