A 54-year-old Inverness man inflicted a serious eye injury on his partner after he shouted and swore at her near their home.

A jury at Inverness Sheriff Court convicted William Allan, of Benula Road, of three charges, one of breaching bail by contacting her, verbally abusing her on a footpath outside the property and punching her on the head, causing her to fall to the ground and thereafter repeatedly punching and kicking her on the head and body to her injury.

The incident happened on June 20, 2021.

Allan appeared for sentence and heard Sheriff Ian Cruickshank say he was "not convinced to go down the route" of a community-based disposal. But defence solicitor Marc Dickson managed to persuade him otherwise.

He said: "Since this, he has engaged in a drug and alcohol programme and a domestic abusers programme. He has also undertaken previous community payback orders appropriately."

The sheriff ordered Allan to perform the maximum 300 hours of unpaid community work and to pay his former partner £1000 in compensation. He added: "This in no way fully compensates her for her injuries."

Allan was also placed under 18 months of social work supervision and banned from approaching or contacting the woman for the next five years.
