Successful Community Orchard Planting Day in Nairn plants more than 80 new trees on Cemetery Brae
A TREE planting day organised by local groups in Nairn went beyond expectations with almost 80 new trees planted.
The Cemetery Brae Community Orchard Planting Day saw Nairn Allotments Community Orchard Group, Keeping Nairnshire Colourful, Green Hive and Nairn Connects BID and other volunteers come together to give the brae a more colourful look.
Volunteers planted 78 trees in just two hours, going well beyond the 50 planned at the start of the day, with more than 50 people attending.
Des Scholes of Nairn Allotments Orchard Group said: “It was a tremendous day and there is a willingness by the groups and individuals involved to do much more of the same in Nairn. Everyone had fun in the sun on a great social occasion that changed the landscape and benefits the community and the environment.”
Trees were also planted in memory of the late councillor Tom Heggie, with a round of applause in his memory at the start of the event.
Mr Scholes added: “There was so much community goodwill present and folk would like to continue and do a few more things in the new orchard area, a seat or two perhaps and an information board which would include the story of the day and location of the trees donated by Mary Heggie from Tom’s allotment. There would be a dedication to the memory of Tom on that board.”
