A Highland cancer charity would like to thank everyone who has donated to its online festive fundraising appeal.

Maggie’s Highlands, which is based in the grounds of Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, launched the JustGiving Christmas Appeal at the beginning of the month.

And since then the total has risen to an incredible £1450.

Organisers were hoping people would donate anything from £1 to £10 to help make a difference to people and their families living with cancer.

One person who has benefited from the charity is Kate Cameron Reid who moved to Moray last year after losing her husband to cancer in January 2020.

She said it was really fantastic that people had taken the time and trouble to contribute to the appeal. “It’s fantastic to support a cause that does so much and helped our family immensely,” she said.

Shelagh Omondi, of Wimberley Way in Inverness, was also helped by Maggie’s following her cancer diagnosis.

She said she thought the total was “absolutely brilliant”, adding: “People are so hard up just now and everybody is feeling the pinch.”

Seonaid Green, the centre head for Maggie’s Highlands, said: “Some of our centre visitors contact us extremely distressed, but most will leave with a smile and feel more confident about what lies ahead.

“At Maggie’s, we can offer clear and accurate support at what for many can be a time of great uncertainty and change. This can be face-to-face in our centre in Inverness, on the phone, by email and even via Skype. We aim to help people with cancer in the Highlands in whatever way we can.

“The unpredictability of cancer is one of the greatest challenges our centre users face but our highly skilled professional team of staff can help people to regain a sense of control just when they need it most.”

Centre fundraising manager Andrew Benjamin said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated to our Christmas Appeal for Maggie’s Highlands this year. We recognise that it’s been a tough year for everyone with the rise in cost of living expenses, so we really do appreciate everyone who has got involved.

“It’s been a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of the different ways Maggie’s supports people living with cancer, and we’re touched that so many people have come forward to give what they can to help people with cancer when they need it most. People can still donate if they choose to do so and we’d be grateful for individuals and businesses to give what they can.”
