Tesco supermarket’s clothing donation to Highland Hospice after storm damage has topped an incredible £25,000 in value.

Earlier today we reported how the Inverness-based cancer care charity was anticipating a gift of £18-20,000 worth of stock from the supermarket.

But Tesco now say the value of the items they will be passing to the hospice warehouse team to wash and dry for resale will be considerably higher.

A huge thunderstorm hit the city on Sunday and damaged the roof of the firm’s Inshes Extra store.

A cascade of water destroyed a section of ceiling and flood water tainted items on the sales floor.

Rather than bin the goods, management decided to offer them to the popular local charity to help raise funds.

Stephen Macleod, store manager at Tesco Inverness Inshes Extra, said: “We were more than keen to support Highland Hospice cancer charity after the recent flooding.

“We all know people who have been affected by cancer and so it’s important to support the vital work charities like the Highland Hospice do.

“As we know, the charity is a donation-led organisation and we wanted to ensure our stock donation would come in handy in supporting the work that they do to support those in need.”

Shirlee Lumsden, who runs the hospice’s warehouse, said: “We are absolutely delighted and so touched to receive such a valuable donation from Tesco.

“The store representatives who handed them over to us said that they chose the hospice as we provide a service that is close to everyone’s hearts.

“This is such a valuable donation and we can’t express our gratitude enough.

“The crates filled our van twice – incredible. Thank-you Tesco.”

The items donated included women’s clothes such as leggings, jeggings, dresses, tops, jeans, bras, pants, swimsuits and shorts.

There were also kids hoodies, shorts, track suits, t-shirts, baby bibs and sleep suits and a few pairs of men's jeans, sets of towels and bedding.
