A BLACK Isle teenager has been shortlisted for a prestigious Scotland-wide award which celebrates young people and their incredible achievements.
Freya Taylor (17), from Munlochy, has been announced as a finalist in the volunteering category in this year’s Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards.
The former Fortrose Academy pupil was commended for her dedication to helping others, having clocked up over 700 volunteering hours. The compassionate teenager also spearheaded a fundraising campaign to raise money to ship clothes to refugees in need - which she achieved through a sponsored silence and a 24-hour ceilidh, raising over £3,000.
She is among other young people from across the Highlands and Scotland running for the awards.
Other Highland-based finalists are Murdo MacGillivray (18), from Portree, who is a finalist in the Environment category and has been described as an environmental champion and is a passionate supporter of the RSPB. A group of teenagers from Castlebay School on Barra has also been shortlisted thanks to their work in setting up LGBT Champions – a committee focussed on ensuring the school, which has a roll call of just 100 pupils, is free from discrimination and inequality.
Now in its sixteenth year, the awards highlight the triumphs of young people in a range of categories - from sport and the environment to enterprise and volunteering – and shine a light on the invaluable contributions made by remarkable young people across Scotland.
