Surprise results in Labour and SNP heartlands

NORTH Lanarkshire and Perth & Kinross voters have gone against traditional party loyalties in the independence vote.

North Lanarkshire, a traditional Labour heartland, voted 115,783 to 110,922 in favour of Yes (51% to 49%).

Perth & Kinross, which is home to several leading SNP figures including finance minister John Swinney, voted 60% to 40% in favour of No (62,714 to 41,475).
