Supermarket chain Lidl has announced plans for a second Inverness store.

International supermarket chain Lidl has begun the search for a site for its second store in Inverness.

The German based retailer, which already has one store on Telford Street, is now looking for a suitable location in the south of the city.

The new Highland capital is among almost 60 newly announced sites of interest across Scotland where Lidl has ambitions to open a new supermarket, with a dozen potential locations earmarked for the Edinburgh area alone. The list includes a further north store in Banff.

The Scottish expansion is part of the group's ambition to open 1000 stores across Britain by the end of 2023.

The list of desirable locations for new stores is aimed at landowners and landlords with suitable sites who are interested in exploring opportunities with Lidl.

The discounter is seeking prominent sites, which are easily accessible, and have a strong pedestrian or traffic flow, whilst it is also interested in mixed-use sites.

Each supermarket will have between 18,000 and 26,500 sq ft of floor space and dedicated parking for at least 100 cars.

Many of the new Lidl stores will include solar panels to provide renewable energy for the site, and electric vehicle charging points.

Each new store will also become part of Lidl’s food redistribution programme Feed It Back, which sees surplus food donated to those within local communities that need it the most, via food banks or partner charities.

Ross Millar, Lidl’s regional director for Scotland, said: “We want to continue to reach more shoppers across Scotland and our site requirements brochure is a testament of that.

“Each new store will have quality food and drink at great prices including produce from over 60 Scottish suppliers.

“We look forward to opening new stores in the coming months and years and becoming part of local communities.”

Mr Millar added: "We have had a store in Inverness since 1999 and our plan to open a second in the south of the city showcases our commitment to continuing to invest and expand across Scotland.

“In addition to creating further job opportunities, the new store will bring even more great products and fantastic offers to Inverness residents, as well as showcasing the incredible Scottish produce we stock throughout the year.”

As part of its ongoing plans, Lidl has committed to investing £1.3 billion in its store expansion across Great Britain over 2021 and 2022.
